it's just yoga

Yoga for (dis)Ability. Also known as "adapted", "accessible" or "adaptive" yoga. These terms have been used predominantly in the UK and US where yoga practices for people with chronic illnesses or  disability have been flourishing for many years.

At the end of the day, it's just yoga!

We choose to use the term 'yoga for (dis)ability' or  'adapted yoga' so the end user (the person living with a health condition or disability) may have the courage to try a class for the first time.

We explore the essence of a yoga pose and find where that meets you (physically, mentally and spiritually).

HOW DOES YOGA FIT INTO OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY?

When included in occupational therapy, yoga must be used in the context of an overall process and plan of care. This requires the therapist to determine whether specific elements of a yoga practice are harmonious with the client's cultural practices, priorities, or needs and to ensure they positively affect health, well-being, and participation in life (American Occupational Therapy Association, 2017a).

It is NOT a yoga class. The principles and practices of yoga are used as part of a treatment plan. Elements of a yoga practice may be included to facilitate achieving specific goals within your activities of daily living. These elements may include:
- meditation
- asana (yoga poses)
- breathwork
- philosophies and mindfulness

Research suggests that yoga is beneficial for many aspects of our wellbeing. Here's just a few which can go a long way to you being able to perform your daily tasks with ease:
- improved sleep hygiene (better quality sleep mean more energy to do the things you need to do or love to do!)
- self management of stress and anxieties (practical strategies you can take off the mat and into your day)
- better functional movement (reach, grasp, bed mobility)
- improved balance (reduced risk and fear of falls)
- strength and conditioning (feel stronger with better endurance to do the things that are important to you)

Commonly asked questions about classes

  1. Does it matter what kind of disability / diagnosis I have? No. EVERY body is welcome. The classes are aimed to meet your level of ability. We try to keep people with similar level of abilities in the one class.
  2. Do I have to practice on a yoga mat? No. You can practice on a chair (wheelchair or standard) if you prefer. Or if you can get yourself onto the floor (either independently or with a carer) you're more than welcome to practice seated on a mat.
  3. The cost? Please contact Lisa for the cost of classes. It will differ between individual classes and small groups etc. And how much support is required.
  4. How long are the classes? Classes run for 60 minutes.
  5. Do I have to attend each class? Yes and No. It's important to commit to your practice in order to gain the benefits. Terms  are scheduled in 10 week blocks.
  6. What do I need to bring?  You don't need to bring a thing. Wear comfortable clothing you can move and stretch in. If you have your own mat that you'd prefer to use, please bring it to class with you.
  7. What time is the class? Check the listed times. Always arrive a little earlier if it takes you a while to transfer onto the floor.
  8. Do I need to book in? Yes. Bookings are essential as mats are limited!
  9. Why are class numbers limited? This is to ensure everyone's safety, and so you get the most out of your practice. Register early - most classes have only 6 spots available! We also need a minimum of 4 people booked in to run a class.
  10. What if I need some help during class? If you need assistance during class, please bring a carer / friend/ family member with you.  We will try to locate a volunteer to assist you in class if you need one, however, we can't always guarantee we can find someone.
  11. How can I use my NDIS plan? Depending on your plan, attending a yoga class and (more importantly) having the assistance to do so, you will need to check with your NDIS plan manager or your LAC.  Lisa Bidgood Bodywork is a registered provider under "Exercise and Physiology Groups" and "Innovative Community Participation". If you are plan managed within NDIS, you will need to have funding allocated to those domains.
